Vedi Napoli...

(A wonderful day spent in Naples with my friends Shawn and Michiko.)

(Everything has started with a visit to the NATO base in Gricignano (Naples) this summer, where I discovered that the United State citizen living there do not even get in touch with our culture. Disappointed by this discovery, I decided to introduce my friends to Naples and its ancient history.)

(I tried to explain them the differences between north and south of Italy. Indeed in Naples it feels like being in another country, in good or bad ways. Starting from its people, very friendly and vivacious, new feelings for people of other nation. It’s a very happy way to live, but sometimes it gets into sadness. There are many difficulties in Naples and everybody must be adaptale.)

(On Monday the 17th of September we decided to go for a sightseeing of the city. The appointment was at the metro station of Aversa at 8.30am, the destination was Vanvitelli square in Vomero district. It’s very easy to reach this area from the city centre of Naples, indeed we took the “funicolare” (train used to reach the top of the hills, on which Naples is built) from Toledo street, close to Plebiscito square, towards piazza Fuga (Escape square). )

(In the eighteenth century the Vomero was a place for a holiday and there were many villas. The area at that time was agricultural and difficult to access from the lower city. In the first World War, the Vomero had become an upscale residential neighborhood. The connections with the lower town suffered an improvement, with the entry into operation of the funicular Central in 1926.)

(Once we arrived, we walked up to Sant’Elmo castle, 10 minutes away from the funicolare station. At the castle we found a breathless view of the landscape, where we saw the entire city from a sky view:  its islands (like Capri), the gulf and the mountains of the Amalfi coast. A tip to the reader, if you arrive at the castle before 10am, the entry is free.)

(Then we went to visit the San Martino’s certosa (a monastery), next to the castle. But first we stopped for a proper Neapolitan Coffee! My americans friends were entranced by the aroma and the taste of the REAL coffee.)

(There was also a museum in a church, with various sacristies decorated like an art gallery of ancient times.)

Una sezione navale  e carrozze reali.
(A naval section and royal carriages.)

(There was a theatre section as well. There we found pictures, stamps and painting related to the San Carlino theatre. It was a popular theatre during the 19th century, like the famous San Carlo theatre. There it was born the famous “mask” of Pulcinella, substituted then by FeliceSciosciammocca, another theatrical “mask” created by Eduardo Scarpetta. He bought and redecorated the theatre, by then in ruin. But in the end it was demolished in the 1884.)

(In the area where I live, there are scary places, where you don’t feel  yourself safe. But there are other places as well: magic places with special people.)

(The town of Gragnano (Neaples), with its Pasta Maker, is one of these. The pasta that we eat today is the result of century of food creativity that makes the Neapolitan famous all over the world.)

(I get close to the pasta world and its “Maccheroni Seller”, as they were called once, thanks to the “100 years of pasta”, organized by Giuseppe Di Martino, young businessman of a patisserie.)

(Giuseppe is an happy and dynamic guy, with a modern mentality, very “digitized” in business communication, but at the same time close to the traditions, his land and his family. Once I told him with a smile that he has the head of a Milanese (hardworker) and the heart of a Neapolitan (passionate).)

(The event was organized for the centenary of the Di Martino’s company, with the presentation of the book “Cento anni di Pasta”, entirely dedicated to the Pasta and in which you can find famous chef of the “Golden Age”.)

(Thanks to this book I discovered that the Italians living in north of Italy discovered the Pasta just after the unification of the Italian peninsula in the end of the 19th century.  Playfully it has been written that they come down in the south as restaurant owner and went back in the north as pasta maker.)

(The book has been edited by Casa Editrice Malvarosa, a beautiful business history with its woman editor Rossella Guarracino.)

(After the presentation of the book there has been a fine dinner at the Grand HotelParker’s, one of the best historic places of Neaples with panorama on the gulf.)

(After the presentation of the book there has been a fine dinner at the Grand Hotel Parker’s, one of the best historic places of Neaples with panorama on the gulf.)

(The owner of this villa is the young director, a very nice person,  that amused me with his way of trying to understand the culture of Naples and the Neapolitans. Places so beautiful and important are quite often seen as far away and unaffordable for us Neapolitans.)

(The dinner at the Parker’s it has been focused on the pasta, from the starters to the desserts.)

(The same evening I’ve met Benedetta Gargano and Francesco Uccello, two very good bloggers. Indeed new blogs are opening here in Campania (Naples region). )

Ringrazio Francesco, mio compagno di incursioni in cucina, dove abbiamo fotografato, man man che uscivano, le varie pietanze.
(I thank Francesco, my friend in the kitchen, were we took pictures at each dish. Is not easy going behind the curtain of the chefs.)

(That evening there were three of them plus the chef executive of the Hotel Parker’s restaurant “George”, Bacioterracino Vincenzo helped by Peppe Aversa, Enrico Cosentino (from the Italian chef association of the Amalfi coast).)

(The journalist Laura Gambacorta, food ambassador of Naples (nickname given her by Carlo Vischi), contributed to the book.)

(What else to say? A salute to my Region and for us..Let’s try to carry on!)
